I really liked this book! I don’t think I’ve ever read a book where BOTH MCs are guys’ guys (gruff, unsentimental, loud, crabby, bold, foul-mouthed, blunt), but it totally worked and felt very believable. In fact, I don’t know that anyone else would have put up with or been attracted to either of these two men! They were perfect for each other and I enjoyed watching their relationship grow. Instalust, but thankfully not instalove. In fact, they both seem shocked when love sneaks up on them.The dialog was great and very realistic, though if you’re not a fan of the F-word, you’ll be skipping a lot. The cursing felt authentic for the MCs and the players, however. I LOVED that the MCs TALKED to each other about their feelings (OMG!) toward the end of the book (even though it was snarky and filled with expletives, it was so them.) Their banter was perfect. The hockey backdrop rings true, as well. You can tell it’s not Gale’s first hockey romance because she gets all the details right.In a more trite book, Troy would have tried to handle the issue at the end by himself under the guise of “protecting” Shane. Fortunately, we have two MCs who don’t need (or want) any protecting. What a nice change from many m/m books where at least one of the MCs is so broken he can barely function. While Troy and Shane are far from perfect and still working on where their lives are going (mostly Shane), they are strong and secure about their actions – which I appreciated. Gale wrote two characters that I really liked getting to know and I rooted for. Probably one of my favorite couples.The sexytimes are super hot! Where (and how often) these men (so refreshing that neither are even close to “boy” or “kid”) get down to business.....they are just asking to get caught! So, the big drama should come as no surprise. What is refreshing is how adult the MCs are about handling it. (Maybe I’ve just been reading too many books where 28 year olds act like 18 year olds). I liked that both of them were willing to make career sacrifices for each other. It made their relationship feel very balanced.There may have been one or two missing words (the sentences were a little awkward but still worked), but thankfully those were the only (possible) typos that I saw. I liked the secondary characters and can’t wait for Xavier’s story. I’d kinda like to see him with River, but that means River’s current bf has to go bye-bye, which would be sad (but I'd get over it. He doesn't even have a line).I always like Gale’s books, but Coach’s Challenge may be one of my favs.
