I first got into reading Red Sonja from the Gail Simone run, and thought I would check out one of the earlier runs while it was on sale. And while I wouldn't say I disliked reading the older version, I can't say it was as memorable or entertaining as I was expecting.Red Sonja belongs to the old-fasioned 'sword and sorcery' style of comic books, sharing a universe with Conan the Barbarian. As a young girl, her family and tribe were slaughtered by Marauders. But after a visit from the Goddess, Sonja rises as th She-Devil with a Sword, warring against evil the world over. At least, that's what's supposed to happen.Overall, I can't really say I'm impressed by the way Avon handles Sonja's character. In the few minor subplots and one-off chapters, she comes off well, displaying considerable tracking and fighting skills. But in the main plot, where she is fighting the Dark God, she's too quick to rely on allies, and has a remarkably poor success rate. No to mention the series starts a new arc write at the end, denying any real climax.I'm just going to go back to Simone.
